Wrexham Basketball At This Weekend's International Games
Jun 21, 2015, 9:40 pm

This weekend saw Deeside LC hosting Wales U16s playing Ireland's U15s and Wales' U18s playing Ireland's U17s.

There was some great basketball played over the two days and it was great to see Wrexham's Neal Allen playing for the U18s. Neal's family helped, along with some of the other players' families, to provide refreshments over the two days.

Wrexham was also represented on the officials' table with senior player and youth coach, Rich Holden, scoring and Head Coach, Dave Ellis, recording the stats to provide to both sides.

Several of Wrexham's under 14s attended an Elite National Development session at St David's High School, Saltney, last Tuesday and hopefully this will lead to those players eventually represented Wales.

Warriors Slow Starters
Oct 13, 2014, 11:58 pm

Wrexham Warriors 45 Saltney Slayers 66

Despite missing three players the Warriors were hoping they could repeat Friday's performance on Monday as they welcomed Saltney Slayers to Glyndwr's Sports Centre. It wasn't to be. Wrexham missed too many fast breaks in the first quarter and allowed Slayers' guard, Rimas, to drive to the basket too often. Warriors struggled to make up the points gap in the seconds quarter and went into half time trailing by eighteen points. The team worked hard in the second half to not allow Slayers to widen the gap but the visitors crept ahead to a twenty three point lead by the end of the third. Arturas of Slayers was fouled out in the final quarter, leaving them with five men. Warriors were able to capitalise on this somewhat and won the final quarter by four points. Warrior's coach, Mark Timperley, summarised the game by saying "We allowed them too much room in the first quarter and failed to win at the boards. As there's a few new players in the squad it's difficult to play team moves when we're still getting used to each others' game."

Warriors Start Season Off With a Win Away to Deeside Sharks

Trevor makes a lay up against Deeside Sharks

Warriors started their season off with a win against Deeside Sharks at Hope Leisure Centre on Friday 10th October.

It looked like new team Sharks were going to make a mark on the league with a confident start in the first quarter, leading Warriors by three points.

Warriors worked hard in the second quarter and made the most of some fast breaks that allowed them to sneak into the lead and finish the half nine points ahead.

The third quarter was crucial and the score sheet was testament that Warriors passed the ball around and used the full five to put points ahead of Sharks. the bench went crazy as Gareth Roberts made a sneaky steal and followed it up by scoring a simple lay up after a decpetive hand off by Joel Homfray.

To close the gap on Warriors the Sharks' strategy in the fourth was to open up their three point shooters. They made nine points from this but Warriors' offense was quick to react on any turn over balls and maintained their lead. Trevor Wellsted of the Warriors ended the game by giving Wrexham a three pointer from the half way in the final second.

Warriors face Saltney Slayers at home in Glyndwr University on Monday 13th October.

Disappointing Start To The Season
Oct 6, 2014, 11:42 pm

A weakened Raiders welcomed Oswestry Wizards to Glyndwr Sports Centre on Monday night. Lacking two guards, Raiders were unable to match Wizard's fast breaks and a devastating third quarter left a five man Raiders with too much to do in the last quarter. Let's hope Wrexham's other team, Warriors, can have better luck away on Friday to Deeside Sharks at Hope Leisure Centre.
