As the saying goes, "You have to be in it to win it". Coaches Rich and Ian would like to congratulate the players for their commitment this season, especially those that have hardly missed a game or session. Also, a thank you goes out to all the supportive parents.

Warriors 56 Raiders 47 3rd Feb 2014

Wrexham Warriors 56 Wrexham Raiders 47

It is always going to be a close game when Wrexham Basketball Club’s two teams meet at their home of Glyndwr University’s Sports Centre. Monday’s game did not disappoint as, despite sinking three threes in the first quarter, Raiders were only able to finish the quarter two points ahead of determined Warriors. The second quarter was similar to the first as a vocal Warriors worked hard to cash in on some steals from a tiring Raiders.

The third quarter saw both teams starting with twenty nine points each but the Warriors’ coach, Mark Timperley, was right to play an aggressive man defence as Raiders struggled to get open for the easy three points. Hard work at the boards allowed Warriors to go on the offensive in the third quarter, finishing twelve points ahead of Raiders. The final quarter was a quiet affair with Warriors running down the clock and Raiders still struggling to capitalise on their possession. It was obvious that Raiders were struggling without two of their regular guards and having one of their top scorers, Bart Kucharski, on the bench in the second half. Performances of note were Raiders’ Aaron Chin, chasing his shots to monopolise on rebounds and Joel Homfray’s similar hard work for Warriors at the boards. Top scorers: Patryk Solowieski, Raiders (15) Joel Homfray, Warriors (15).

Weekly Round Up w/b 13 Jan 2014
Jan 16, 2014, 11:41 pm

Both Wrexham Basketball Club’s senior teams were away from their Glyndwr University home this week.

Warriors had the biggest trek to make in order to play their NWBA Cup game against Eryri Celts in Bangor.

The travelling side started brilliantly and developed a lead against the Celts which they maintained for the entirety of the first half.

But just a few minutes of madness and illdiscipline in the third quarter turned it around for Celts. Warriors were eleven points down going into the fourth but couldn’t quite just get over the line to claw back the win.

Player/coach Mark Timperley said: “A few things cost us; mainly ill-discipline and a shed-load of free-throws missed. At least we can now concentrate on taking the top spot in the second division of the league.”

Final Score: Eryri Celts 67 Wrexham Warriors 63

Raiders got their second division campaign underway with a win against Oswestry Wizards.

They started strongly and by the end of the first quarter were up by six points, with the difference seven at the half.

But Raiders were also getting into foul trouble amid some frustrating refereeing decisions. With four players on four fouls, coach Dave Ellis needed to rotate the bench.

Wizards took advantage of this and led by ex-Wrexham players Mike Hughes and Chris Jones, managed to close the gap. The scores were all square at the end of the third stanza at 46-46.

Raiders needed to respond in the final quarter. And they did just that with Bart Kucharski and Aaron Chin leading the way, building a slim lead going into the last three minutes.

Centre Matt Gamble produced a key play in the closing stages, grabbing an offensive rebound to set up a three point play. When ice-cool Lukas Kuzak hit a three point shot shortly after, it put Raiders in control for the last phases of the game. Top scorers for Raiders were Bart Kucharski 31 point and Aaron Chin with 17 points.

Final Score: Oswestry Wizards 61 Wrexham Raiders 68.

Wrexham has a busy week next with Warriors going to take on Wizards, Raiders playing Mold B at Glyndwr and the Under 18s, Wrexham Minotaurs, taking on Ruthin Redcaps at Flint High School.

There’s still room for players that want to get stuck in this season.
